All about acupuncture

What is acupuncture?

Acupuncture originated in China more than 2,500 years ago and is part of a holistic system of medicine that also includes nutrition, movement practices such as qi gong and tai chi, massage, and herbal remedies. These elements work together to promote overall health.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), qi (pronounced “chee”) and blood flow through the body along pathways called meridians. When the flow of qi becomes blocked or unbalanced, symptoms such as pain, illness, or emotional distress can develop.

Disruptions in the meridians can be caused by many factors, including lifestyle habits like overwork, poor diet, or lack of exercise; injury; stress; and common illnesses such as colds or flu.

Modern research shows that acupuncture stimulates the nervous system, prompting the body to release neurotransmitters such as pain-relieving endorphins and serotonin, which helps promote relaxation and wellbeing.

By inserting fine needles along specific meridians, an acupuncturist influences the flow of qi and blood, supporting the body’s natural healing processes.

In the UK, acupuncture is integrated into NHS care and is recommended for conditions including chronic pain, headaches, migraines, and prostatitis.
